No 2026 La Roche Posay recall exists. But FDA still lists the brand's March 2025 Effaclar Duo benzene recall as Ongoing. Four months later L'Oreal quietly refiled the Duo as a 4.0% rinse off cleanser, down from a 5.5% leave on lotion. A new $40 Anthelios sunscreen just hit US stores.
On March 5, 2025, L'Oreal filed three recall notices with FDA. All of them covered the same product line: La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo, the brand's bestselling acne treatment. The FDA Enforcement Report shows the first recall covering 2,226,801 bottles of a single lot of the 40 mL tube. The second covered 14,460 bottles of the Effaclar 3 Step Acne System kit. The third covered every lot of the Dual Action Acne Treatment in the US. Reason: trace levels of benzene. Classification: Class II. Status, 20 months later: Ongoing.
Nineteen months after that notice, on or around October 14, 2026, La Roche Posay put a different acne story on US store shelves. The brand launched Anthelios UV Defense SPF 50, its first US sunscreen with bemotrizinol, FDA's first newly approved over the counter sunscreen filter in more than 25 years. The press covers the launch. The 2025 recall gets no new press. Of the 95 products FDA tested, 6 hit the elevated benzene threshold, including Effaclar Duo. We read both filings.
Is La Roche Posay recalling anything in 2026?
No. We checked the openFDA drug enforcement API on October 26, 2026 using recalling firm 'L'Oreal USA'. The only hits were the three Effaclar Duo recalls dated March 5, 2025. There's no 2026 La Roche Posay or L'Oreal USA entry in FDA's enforcement database. The 2025 entries still carry the status 'Ongoing', and FDA classified them Class II on May 9, 2025, which the agency defines as a product that may cause temporary or medically reversible harm. FDA's own statement said more than 90 percent of the 95 benzoyl peroxide products it tested had undetectable or extremely low benzene; six products hit the elevated threshold and were voluntarily recalled, including Effaclar Duo and three from Proactiv, Walgreens and SLMD. FDA added that for most people the risk of cancer from this exposure is 'very low'. The file isn't closed.
In a statement to trade press at the time, the company said Valisure's evaluation 'did not meet the necessary standards' and that products sold in other countries don't contain benzene. L'Oreal recalled all US lots of Effaclar Duo anyway, 'out of an abundance of caution'. The company hasn't posted a dedicated note about the recall on the La Roche Posay US homepage.
Skinventry's write up of the Allies of Skin SPF 50 recall walked the same mechanism in a sunscreen context: an independent lab finds a contaminant, the brand recalls, FDA posts the notice, and the news cycle moves on while the file stays open.
Inside the Effaclar Duo you can buy today
Here's where the receipt lives. We pulled two DailyMed Drug Facts filings for the Effaclar Duo line and compared them side by side.
Both products carry the same name. The old product, which L'Oreal called 'Effaclar Duo Acne Treatment', was a lotion. Its active ingredient was benzoyl peroxide 5.5 percent. Its last Drug Facts filing has an effective date of December 31, 2023. The labeler was L'Oreal USA, Inc., and the manufacturer was Beauty Manufacturing Solutions Corp. That is the product the Valisure team tested in 2024 and the one FDA recalled in March 2025. The new product, which L'Oreal now calls 'Effaclar Duo Dual Action Acne Medication Cleanser', is a liquid, filed as a rinse off cleanser. Its active ingredient is benzoyl peroxide 4.0 percent. Its effective date is July 9, 2025, four months and four days after the recall. The labeler now is L'Oreal USA Products Inc, and the manufacturer is Accupac, LLC.
Benzoyl peroxide forms benzene faster when it is warm, and faster when it sits on skin for a long time. Lowering the strength from 5.5 percent to 4.0 percent and moving the product from a leave on lotion to a rinse off cleanser cuts both of those inputs. L'Oreal didn't announce this reformulation. We only know because FDA requires the Drug Facts filing. If a shopper looked for Effaclar Duo on Amazon or Ulta today and bought what the search surfaced, they'd be buying a different drug product than the one in the brand's older before and after pictures.
The Effaclar Duo PLUS M, a sister product that was also on L'Oreal's acne shelf, now lists salicylic acid as its only active ingredient on DailyMed. The last two Drug Facts filings for the Plus M line are from June 2025 and June 2026. There's no benzoyl peroxide in the Plus M line now.
Who owns La Roche Posay?
L'Oreal SA, listed on Euronext Paris, has owned La Roche Posay since 1989 per L'Oreal's own registration document timeline. The brand sits inside L'Oreal's Active Cosmetics division, alongside CeraVe and Vichy. The name itself goes back to 1928 and the thermal spring in the Vienne region of France; the modern company was formed in 1975 by Rene Levayer and sold to L'Oreal 14 years later. Who actually makes it is the shorter question. We reviewed the openFDA National Drug Code directory for brand Anthelios on October 26, 2026. All 40 entries list an L'Oreal entity as the labeler. For the current Effaclar Duo cleanser, the DailyMed filing names Accupac, a US contract maker, as the manufacturer. The laboratoire dermatologique line on the box is a brand name.
The new $40 Anthelios, and what the label doesn't yet say
The news story is good. For 25 years the US was stuck with the same list of sunscreen filters. The last FDA approval was 1999. In June 2026, FDA finalized the OTC monograph for bemotrizinol, a filter the EU has had since 2000 that handles UVA better than avobenzone without the stability trouble. L'Oreal, which owns almost every mass sunscreen brand in the US, hit the launch window hard. Neutrogena got its bemotrizinol SKUs on US shelves first. Ultra Violette landed next. La Roche Posay followed in October with Anthelios UV Defense SPF 50, promoted at $39.99 on the brand's own US site.
What's in it? Here's the catch. We checked DailyMed for 'anthelios uv defense' on October 26, 2026 and got zero results. We checked for 'bemotrizinol' and got 20 Drug Facts filings: Neutrogena and Ultra Violette are both there; the new La Roche Posay BEMT Anthelios is not. The brand is selling the product. The legal Drug Facts label isn't yet filed with FDA DailyMed as of the October 23, 2026 database publish. The company isn't out of compliance; MoCRA product listing is separate from DailyMed. But we couldn't pull official active ingredient percentages from FDA until the Drug Facts filing posts. The brand's own US product page sits behind a Cloudflare block that returns 403 to automated readers, so trade press coverage is the only ingredient source we had.
What the Duo and the Anthelios share
Both products are promoted the same way: the pharmacy brand that dermatologists trust, built on 'La Roche Posay thermal spring water', sold in medical offices and pharmacies around the world. That positioning is the asset. The dermatologist recommended label is the reason the brand can charge $40 for a face sunscreen. Skinventry's lab post on chemical vs mineral sunscreen for dark skin showed the same filter stack on cheaper SKUs in the same portfolio.
We don't say the Effaclar Duo caused harm. The Record Law says only what the record says: FDA found elevated benzene in a lot of this product, L'Oreal recalled every lot, FDA hasn't closed the recall, and L'Oreal filed a quieter, weaker, rinse off version of the same product four months later. Each of those is on the record. None of them is on the brand's homepage.
CAERS, FDA's cosmetics adverse event system, shows one event report naming La Roche Posay in a query we ran October 26, 2026: a November 17, 2023 entry listing anaphylactic reaction, palpitations, and swelling. FDA notes a CAERS report doesn't establish that a product caused the event, and that CAERS counts can't estimate risk. The EU Safety Gate alert search returned zero rows for the brand on the same day. The FDA warning letters page returned no letter addressed to the brand.
What a shopper should take from this
If you want the new bemotrizinol filter, every L'Oreal mass brand will have it in US stores by next summer. The Anthelios at $39.99 is the premium rail of the same portfolio. If you want the sensitive skin pharmacy positioning, the premium is for the brand.
Check the lot code on your tube.
If you have an older Effaclar Duo tube at home from before July 2025, check the lot on the crimp against the FDA notice. The one that got the biggest recall was lot MYX46W of the 40 mL leave on lotion.
The current tube on the shelf is a different drug product.
On March 5, 2025, L'Oreal filed three recall notices with FDA. On October 26, 2026, FDA still lists those recalls as Ongoing. Between those two dates, L'Oreal shipped a reformulated, weaker, rinse off Effaclar Duo, and a $40 Anthelios with a filter the EU has had for a quarter century. The brand didn't have to tell shoppers about the first. It gave the launch of the second a press cycle. Both are La Roche Posay. Both are on the record.
Photograph the Anthelios box or the Duo cleanser and Skinventry shows the brand, the owner, where it is made, and the public record on it, with a source link for every line. For La Roche Posay today, that record is the ongoing 2025 Effaclar Duo recall, the current Drug Facts filing for the 4.0 percent cleanser, and L'Oreal SA as the parent behind the pharmacy label on the pack.
